Bike Route: Cadaques to Bordils, 37 miles, 2200 feet of climb
It felt so good to be back on the bikes and outdoors. We started out backtracking on the same route from Cadaques to Roses. After that, all was new again.
In Roses, we passed a big go-cart track and were really tempted to take a few rounds there--but the track was closed. Go-carting is very big in Europe, and very competitive. We learned about that from one of our guides on a kayak trip in Greece several years ago. He had been very good at the sport.
Anyway, we couldn't try our skills on four wheels, so we continued down the road on two wheels. Much of our route was on gravel roads through orchards and farm fields. Crates were stacked in the orchards, ready for workers to pick the ripe apples.
Our accommodations Sunday night were in a gated stone farmhouse that was built several hundred years ago. Our host, Anna, and her husband did not speak English, but we did fine with Google Translate and a phone call from Anna's daughter Laura.
The farm belonged to the family of Anna's husband and had been passed on from father to son for many generations. Laura explained that her parents had two daughters and no sons, so the farm would likely go to Laura's son, who is now five.
Anna cooked us an amazing dinner using mostly produce from her garden and eggs from her chickens. We had a huge fresh salad, Spanish omelet, pork sausage, and Catalan cream dessert.
Our room opened onto the garden and was incredibly comfortable.
We rode for miles on gravel roads through apple orchards. We could not resist; we did pick and eat an apple. It was delicious. |
