It was so quiet in our little apartment overnight. We loved it.
Before Ken got sick, we had talked about taking a ferry across the lake to Malcesine today, and biking the 6-mile stretch of dedicated bike path from there to a point south along the lake, then back. We decided not to do that, to give Ken as much time as possible to recover.
What did we do on the first of two days in Salo? I got a haircut at an elegant shop down the street. We found a bakery a few steps away, with delicious breakfast croissants and rolls. We had a not-great lunch at a tourist restaurant in front of the ferry. (Yes, we know better than to eat at the biggest restaurant right on the dock, but we couldn't resist sitting in the middle of the main square and people watching for an hour.) We walked the entire length of the old town to a huge Italmark supermarket (think Target Superstore). Later, we walked almost as far again to an ATM for cash and to a really excellent gelateria for gelato.
Ken is feeling better.
The weather is outstanding.
Our apartment is quiet.
All is good.
The Duomo di Santa Maria Annunziata is right behind our apartment building. It was built in the 15th century, in the late Gothic style.
The duomo still serves an active community.
After the tourists left in the evening, the town was quiet.
A clock sits on top of one gate to the old town.
A smaller square along the riva.
The bell tower of the duomo behind our apartment. The bells ring the time and beautiful music.
