The plan was to spend today biking up to a pretty lake in Levico Terme, eat lunch, and bike back. We looked at the route and decided we didn't want to push through the 3 miles of climbing at the beginning of the ride.
Instead, we walked across the street and bought tickets to tour the old castle, then wandered around town and saw the sights and had a nice lunch.
| When we were in Spain, we saw a lot of these green tile roofs. This is the first we have seen in Italy. |
| The Torre Verde was a part of the medieval fortifications of the city. When it was built, it stood at the northeast corner of the city walls, on the Adige River. In 1858, the river was straightened and moved away from the old wall, and the tower became a warehouse. |
| A medieval castle towers over the old town. |
| The Piazza Duomo, with the Fontana del Nettuno in the foreground and the Duomo di Trento in the background. |
| The Fontana del Nettuno is from the 18th century and was built in the Baroque style. It symbolizes the sea god Neptune and his trident (three-pronged spear), the source of the Roman name for Trento, which was Tridentum. The statue of Neptune is a copy; the original marble statue has been moved to the courtyard of the Palazzo Thun. |
| The Duomo di Trento was built over a 4th-century church dedicated to San Vigilius, the patron saint of Trento. In 1124-1149, Prince-Bishop Altemanno constructed a palace and cathedral on the site. The cathedral was reconstructed in 1212 in the Romanesque-Lombard style, and the 1212 structure is largely retained today. |
| The Basilica di Santissima Annunziata also wears a green tile roof. This church combines several classical architectural styles. |
| Narrow, quiet streets butt up against the old city walls. |
| The Torrione Madruzzianois was built in 1562 to house the police guards. It is now a hotel called the Torrione Trento. |
| The Castello del Buonconsiglio was built as a fortress in the 13th century, became the residence of the prince-bishops of Trento, was turned into a barracks during the Napoleonic era, and is now a museum. |
| A busy highway separates the front of the castle from the streets of the old town. Our apartment is directly behind the castle. |
