The rain stopped overnight, the sun came up, and the bikes said they were ready to go, so we loaded them up and wheeled them out.
It was early, about 9:15, but the cycle/pedestrian path was already crowded as we left town the same way we had arrived, curving west around the north shore of the lake through Torbole, up the little mountain to the pass, down on the Ciclovia Adige-Garda to the Adige River, where we turned south on the EV7. For about 25 miles, we followed the river through vineyards and apple orchards, riding easily and smoothly on the paved cycle path. Then a climb, not too steep, up over the hills that surround the lake, and a steep descent into Garda.
Our first impression of Garda was good. It is a smaller city, embracing a ferry harbor with a broad riva lined with outdoor restaurants and shops.
We found our apartment right on the riva, our host met us within minutes, and we hauled our gear up two short flights to a spacious, clean studio apartment with big windows. It seemed like a fine place to spend the next four nights.
The usual drill: showers and food. We found a restaurant just a few steps from our apartment and had a good late lunch / early dinner. Afterward, we hiked across the old town, through the gate, across the canal, and up to a main street with a good-sized market.
