Ravenna is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its early Christian monuments and mosaics. We booked a rest day here so that we could see some of the mosaics, and we purchased a pass that would allow us entry to five of them: the Basilica of San Apollinare Nuovo, Chapel of San Andrea and Archiepiscopal Museum, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Basilica of San Vitale, and Neonian Baptistery.
It was again incredibly hot. We walked to four of the sites, then got sidetracked by a shop with local cheeses, meats, and other products. After purchasing lunch and breakfast foods, we had to go back to the apartment and eat. By then it was mid-afternoon and too warm to walk to the fifth site. Ken took a nap, I worked on the blog and on updating our itinerary, communicating with hosts, purchasing tickets, etc.
By 17:30, it was cooling off a bit, so I woke Ken up and we went out to see the San Apollinaire Nuovo, our fifth ticketed mosaic site.
We had dinner reservations at 19:30 at Cabiria, a little restaurant in a garden at the end of our street, recommended by Valentina. The food was delicious, the service impeccable.
We could have used three nights in Ravenna. The old town is small and walkable and quiet, and our apartment was quite comfortable.
The mosaics are stunning. We took so many pictures. I could caption them all, and cull the collection to eliminate duplication. But that would take a lot of time, and I don't want to spend this beautiful afternoon on that. So here they are, in all their unedited beauty.
