Saturday is market day in Assisi, so we started out there, planning to buy everything we need to make a sauce for our fettuccine for dinner. We found a couple of produce stands, but no local cheese, honey, olives, or bread. The market was mostly linens and clothing.
So we switched gears and joined the throngs snaking their way through the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis. We followed the Rick Steves audio tour of St. Francis's tomb, the lower church, and the upper church. The frescoes, ceilings, arches, and other art and architectural features are stunning. The crowd moved through pretty quickly. We took a few minutes to sit in a pew and absorb the space in each nave. The fresh breeze and view as we exited on the piazza were welcoming.
Meghan stopped halfway back to the apartment, to eat a little pizza with a Coke. Ken and I went back to our apartment, where we opened all the windows to let the breeze blow through, sliced up the prosciutto and cheese we bought at the wine shop last night, and ate it with crackers, tomatoes, and peach jam for lunch. Followed, of course, by Baci chocolates from Perugia.
Meghan soon appeared at the door. She and Ken put up their feet and read while I worked on the blog. Eventually, we got hungry. Ken and I walked down to the supermarket about a mile away, then Ken cooked up some of the fettuccine we made yesterday, plus mushrooms and tomato sauce from the market, sliced meat and cheese and brown bread, and salad and olives. A feast. We still have enough fettuccine for two more meals!
