Our plan was to ride a day loop to Grasmere and visit a Wordsworth site and eat famous Grasmere ginger cake. We didn't get that far. We were tired, our legs were tired, the bikes were tired. Instead, we wandered around town, read, hiked partway up a steep hill to a waterfall and decided that was too much work so turned around and went back to our patio for a little more rest. Ken watered the garden, we chatted with David.
Much of Ambleside, like Keswick, was built using the local greenish slate. St. Mary's Church was built in 1850 in the Gothic Revival style. |
Bridge House, built over Stock Gyhll, is over 300 years old and was originally a summer house and storehouse for apples for Ambleside Hall. |
The streets in this busy tourist and market town were a little quieter on Sunday afternoon. |
