Aix is known for the healing powers of its thermal baths. Today, Ken tried to go to one of them. He really did. He presented himself at the desk with cash in hand. The receptionist tried to get him to sign up for a week-long pass, but he held firm at a one-day pass.
The receptionist asked if he had a swim cap. No, he did not. Well, he could purchase one at the other desk.
But did he have flipflops? His sandals would not do. No, he did not have flipflops. Well, he would have to go a few blocks away to a store to buy those.
And what kind of swimsuit did he have? Ken showed the receptionist his swim trunks. Oh, those would not do. You need a little tight Speedo, like in the picture.
By then, Ken had lost interest in the spa. He left and went to the lake instead.
I spent the day in Northfield, washing clothes, getting my hair cut, buying sweet corn and peaches, sharing laughs with friends at our weekly happy hour.
Being with my sister and brother this week was a gift. I am so grateful for them. Mom had a very rough last year. In the end, her death was fairly sudden, but not really unexpected. The three of us had talked through the possibility of her suffering a crisis while one or more of us were traveling, and had made some major decisions ahead of time. I miss her, but at the same time I am relieved that she will not suffer any more.
I decided to leave Izzie at the kennel and not visit her. She seems happy and settled in the photos and videos we get from the kennel. But the house in Northfield was very quiet without her. |
